On October 28, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued an announcement to publicly solicit opinions on the Specifications and Conditions for the Automotive Power Battery Industry, aiming to strengthen the supervision of automotive power battery products, prevent low-level repeated construction, and promote the technological progress and large-scale development of power battery manufacturers.

According to the opinion draft issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the traction battery refers to a device installed on the vehicle that can store and recharge electric energy and provide energy for driving the vehicle. It includes lithium ion battery, nickel metal hydride battery and supercapacitor (excluding lead-acid battery). The draft gives normative opinions on the automotive power battery industry from seven aspects: basic requirements of enterprises, requirements for production conditions, requirements for technical capabilities, requirements for products, requirements for quality assurance capabilities, sales and after-sales services, and standardized management.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

This is the third time since this year that national ministries and commissions have officially confirmed the mainstream status of nickel metal hydride batteries through official channels. On June 13, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a message on its website, announcing the implementation plan for the 2014 industrial transformation and upgrading project. Hunan Keba Automobile Power Battery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Keliyuan, has announced the implementation plan of nickel hydrogen battery for hybrid electric vehicles. On July 2, the Ministry of Commerce released the announcement of the centralized anti-monopoly review decision, which approved Keliyuan and Toyota and other proposed joint ventures Kelimei with restrictive conditions. In the announcement, it was pointed out that the nickel hydrogen battery technology is mature, safe and low in price. At present, about 95% of hybrid electric vehicles use nickel hydrogen batteries.

Research shows that although lithium battery is the development direction of power battery in the future, its safety cannot be guaranteed and its cost is relatively high. From the perspective of development trend and speed, only nickel hydrogen battery has the highest degree of industrialization at present. Because nickel hydrogen battery technology is the most mature, it will still be the mainstream of new energy vehicles for a long time in the future. After that, nickel hydrogen battery technology will compete with lithium iron phosphate and hydrogen fuel cells. Battery giants Panasonic and Sanyo also believe that lithium ion power batteries cannot replace nickel metal hydride power batteries in the near future, mainly because nickel metal hydride power batteries are cheap and safe, and have reached large-scale production. However, lithium batteries still need to continue to tackle key issues, such as safety, so commercialization will take some time. All the hybrid vehicles that have been mass produced in the world use the nickel metal hydride battery system. Toyota has always adhered to the mainstream of nickel metal hydride batteries in hybrid vehicles. Last year, Toyota built a production line with an annual output of 100000 units, which is still nickel metal hydride batteries, fully proving the strong and long-term vitality of nickel metal hydride batteries in the market.

There was a period of time when the industry's assertion that "NiMH battery is a backward battery" was rampant. The two most important indicators for considering automotive power batteries are safety and cost. Lithium battery is the core power battery of pure electric vehicle, but the technical problems faced by lithium battery have not been substantially broken through. First, security. The hidden danger of fire, combustion and even explosion of lithium batteries cannot be completely eliminated at present. Second, lithium ion batteries need to protect the circuit to prevent the battery from being overcharged or discharged. Third, the production requirements are high and the cost is high. At present, as the mainstream technology, lithium iron phosphate battery still has such congenital defects as large volume, heavy weight, slow charging and short endurance.

However, from the perspective of the industrial cycle, the nickel hydrogen power battery has entered a mature period, formed large-scale production, and has price advantages. Moreover, NiMH battery is also the only power battery in the battery system used in hybrid electric vehicles that has been actually verified and commercialized and large-scale production. Hybrid electric vehicles, including Toyota Prius, which has the highest sales volume in the world, commonly use nickel metal hydride batteries.
